Verifying Batch-to-Batch Consistency of Iron Oxide Pigments

Introduction

In premium cosmetic manufacturing, color difference (shade variation) is the number one cause of customer complaints. Often, the root cause is not the formulation or process, but inconsistent iron oxide pigments. A reliable supplier should provide verifiable batch consistency data. This article presents Hangyans six-dimension quality control system.

1. Color Consistency: ΔE < 1.0 Commitment

Test method: Datacolor 800 spectrophotometer, D65 illuminant, 10° observer, measuring L, a, b values and ΔE against a reference standard.

Actual data for 10 consecutive batches of iron oxide red (CI 77491, grade HY-R301):

Batch No.       L value       a value    b value  ΔE

R301-2401      42.3        26.8    13.2      0.3

R301-2402      42.5        26.9    13.1      0.4

R301-2403      42.2        26.7    13.3      0.5

R301-2404      42.4        26.8    13.0      0.4

... ... ... ... ...

R301-2410      42.3        26.9    13.2      0.3

Average: L = 42.35, a = 26.82, b = 13.18, ΔE range 0.20.6, all <1.0

Technical assurance: In-line color monitoring system on each production line, automatically sampling every 30 minutes.

2. Chemical Purity Consistency

Parameter       Target Range       Control Method        Frequency

FeOcontent  97.5% 98.5%        Redox titration        Each batch

Moisture (105°C loss) 0.5%       Halogen moisture analyzer   Each batch

Water solubles     0.3%            Conductivity        Each batch

Volatiles at 105°C     0.5%            Gravimetric         Weekly

Magnetic residues <10 ppm Electromagnetic separator + magnetic rods Online continuous

3. Physical Properties Consistency

Parameter     Hangyan Control Range       Test Method

Oil absorption 30      ± 2 g/100g            ISO 787-5

Residue on 325 mesh    0.01%          Vibratory sieve

pH (10% slurry)       6.0 8.0            pH meter

Tap density         0.8 1.2 g/cm³     Tap density tester

4. Incoming Inspection Guide (For Customers)

To help customers verify batch consistency themselves, Hangyan recommends these simple incoming tests:

Quick color check: Use a portable colorimeter (e.g., HunterLab MiniScan) against the reference sample provided require ΔE < 1.5

Fineness test: Grindometer (050 μm) no particles >50 μm

Dispersibility test: 5g pigment + 95g oil phase, high-speed mixing for 5 minutes, drawdown to check for specks

Simple magnetic test: Strong magnet over 1g pigment powder high-quality product shows almost no magnetic residue

5. Hangyans Consistency Commitment

If any batch shows ΔE > 2.0 compared to the reference, Hangyan offers:

Unconditional replacement

Compensation for rework costs (with supporting documentation)

Corrective action report within 48 hours

6. Data Integrity: Full Traceability for Every Batch

Hangyan operates a complete batch traceability system:

Each batch has a unique number tracing back to raw material supplier, production date, production line, and quality inspector

Retained samples for at least 2 years

On request: historical data charts for 10 consecutive batches

Conclusion

Batch consistency is not a slogan it is the result of systematic control. Hangzhou Hangyan Technology Co., Ltd. provides verifiable, traceable, and guaranteed batch consistency through four layers of assurance: raw material control, online monitoring, 100% release testing, and retained sample traceability.
